Why it matters: AI crawlers use heading hierarchy to identify a page's primary topic (H1) versus sub-topics (H2, H3). When a page has 8–10 H1s — each treated as a top-level claim — the LLM cannot cleanly identify which passage answers a specific query. Passage-based retrieval (which drives most modern AI citation systems) depends on clean H1→H2→H3 nesting to chunk content into citable units. Why it matters: When a buyer asks ChatGPT or Perplexity "How does Benifex's AI assistant work?" or "What wellbeing content does Benifex offer?", the LLM needs a citable passage with specific claims. "400 pathways designed by clinical psychologists" is the kind of line that gets quoted; "Boost employee engagement" is not.
